A new update has come about the past couple of weeks! This update is how Mark Zuckerberg has decided to rebrand Facebook. Facebook, the company who owns other social media platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp revealed that they will be rebranded as Meta on the 28th of October 2021. It is important to know that all of these platforms WILL be keeping their names. However, the update is that the company that produces and maintains all of these platforms will now be known as Meta. This is remarkably similar as to how in 2015 Google rebranded into a parent company called Alphabet.
Why is this happening?
Mark Zuckerberg stated that the name Meta represents the company’s move into the metaverse. The Metaverse is a digital world where people can experience an alternate life to their real-world existence.
The meta logo will be used within all apps that are owned by the company. It will also be used for its virtual reality brand Oculus.
Mark Zuckerberg said at the company’s annual conference “Over time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company, and I want to anchor our work and our identity on what we’re building towards. We are now looking at and reporting on our business as two different segments: one of our family of apps and one for work on future platforms.” Zuckerberg also confirmed at the conference that in the future, people will no longer need a Facebook account to use the company’s other services.
