What makes a good digital marketer?

Digital Marketing is a career that has been on the rise for the last couple of years. The good news is that if you are interested in digital marketing there are now hundreds of courses (some are free) that you can take to learn as much as you can about digital marketing and begin your career in it. Universities have also started offering digital marketing courses at an undergraduate level which is excellent. 

First Things First, What Is A Digital Marketer?

Digital marketers are responsible for everything digitally from email marketing to social media marketing to content strategy. Digital marketers help guide and navigate your company’s marketing efforts through various digital channels. They help your company reach the best people through the right channels. For example, if you are a beauty company aimed towards 18-34-year-olds, the person in charge of your digital marketing may utilise TikTok to reach your target audience. 

Now, What Makes A Good Digital Marketer? 

Critical Thinking

Digital marketers need to be strategic. The reason for this is that you need to be able to review what you have done, what you are doing, and what you plan to do. You need to be critical and think about what you can do to improve your work. In the digital marketing world, you need to constantly think about what comes next. You need to be able to review past successes and past failures. 

Self-Motivating

This is an important skill to have as a digital marketer. In a lot of companies sometimes they only have one person who works on their digital marketing which is why it is important to be a self-motivator. Digital marketing is an industry that is constantly changing thus this is something that you need to keep on top of. Digital marketing as a career is constantly littered with motion. If you are someone who cannot work well on their own, or you are someone who constantly needs to be told what to do then this career choice may not be for you. 

Love of Learning

As a digital marketer, you will constantly be learning new things thus you need to be someone who loves to learn new things. Technology and trends are constantly changing and they are quickly changing so you need to be in the know and keep yourself updated on these ever-changing trends. 

Communication Skills

To be a digital marketer, it is important to have good communication skills. The reason for this is that you will need to communicate highly targeted messages to a consumer in need. As a digital marketer, you will need to craft a brand or a product story that will engage the targeted audience on an emotional level. You will need to have excellent verbal and written communication as a digital marketer. 

Analytical Skills

As a digital marketer, you will be overseeing a range of campaigns. Whether these campaigns are paid ad campaigns or social media campaigns, the list is endless. You will need to analyse these campaigns and see what is performing well, what isn’t performing well, what needs improving and changing, etc. Once you have analysed the data, you will communicate a new strategy to your team (if you have one). A digital marketing role requires command of current and developing analytical tools. You will need to have the ability to comb through data with great attention to detail. 

Able To Learn From Past Failures

As a digital marketer, you are going to try and test several things and not all of these things are going to work. These failures, you need to be able to learn from them, do not dwell on them too much. Look at your campaigns and think about what could have been done better, this is a constructive approach and will boost your performance in the long run.
